Mark Kouria

Mark KouriaTriton College Student Association (TCSA) President Mark Kouria has been inspired by Triton College since he was 9 years old. When his parents first immigrated to the United States from Syria, they both attended Triton’s School of Adult Education to learn English. Kouria’s mother, Georgina, later decided to complete her associate degree at Triton.

“My parents took me to several Triton events when she was an adult learner,” Kouria said. “I grew up here.”

A natural-born leader like his parents, Kouria grew up in Elmwood Park and attended Elmwood Park High School. During high school, he was actively involved in several clubs and organizations, such as Student Council, Snowball and Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA).

“When I graduated from high school, I didn’t want to go far from home,” said Kouria. “I decided to attend Triton.”

At Triton, Kouria wanted to engage in activities and clubs just as he had in high school. His fond memories of Triton events from his younger years fueled his motivation even further.

Kouria joined the Program Board, Model United Nations, Model Illinois Government (MIG), AI Club and most importantly, TCSA. He quickly advanced with TCSA and eventually became a presidential candidate. To earn that title, Kouria needed to gather signatures and win the presidential vote.

“I have several responsibilities as the president, such as attending the Triton College board meetings once a month and leading the weekly TCSA meetings,” he said.

“Mark has played a pivotal role in fostering student interest in clubs and organizations,” said TCSA advisor Johnny Urbina. “The Triton College Student Association's orientation on Aug. 27 experienced an impressive turnout, resulting in standing room only. Notably, many attendees were personally invited by Mark.”

Kouria plans on graduating from Triton soon, with hopes of attending a four-year university and then attending law school. Like his parents, he is determined to succeed and is excited about the road ahead.

TCSA provides an exciting opportunity for students to engage in governance, leadership and campus events. By joining the TCSA, students will develop essential leadership skills, participate in campus committees and most importantly, make a positive impact at Triton. The organization is composed of 25 elected student senators and five elected officers.
